The original name of Dhamek Stupa is Dharmarajika Stupa. Dharmarajika is the Sanskrit version of the term, Dhamek. The Stupa signifies Dharma. It is constructed in Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The Stupa is about 13 km far from the Varanasi Cantt.
The Stupas are created as pre-Buddhist tumuli. The stupas have the ascetics buried in them in a seated position. This is known as Chaitya. After Lord Buddha’s salvation, his remains were cremated, and his ashes were split into eight parts after the funeral rites. These ashes are embedded under the eight mounds. The mounds contain Kalash and embers. Very few people know about these early stupas.
